Learn English Homophones: Interactive Vocabulary Game

Homophones are words that sound the same but are spelled differently, like sun and son, or there and their. This free game gives ESL students sixteen short sets of picture pairs. Each set asks them to match the pictures, then pick the spelling that fits the sentence.

How to Play the Homophones Game

Each set has four homophone pairs and three activities:

  • Match the pictures – Eight picture cards are on the screen. Tap a card to hear the word, then find the other picture in the pair (for example, the sun and a son).
  • Choose the spelling – A sentence is missing a word. Pick the homophone that fits, such as “The sun is very hot today” or “The prisoner sat in his cell.”
  • Find the mistake – On a wide screen, a sentence uses the wrong homophone. Tap that word to correct it, such as “His sun can play the guitar” → son. On a phone, those sentences are extra fill-in questions instead.

Why Teachers Use This Homophones Activity

Each pair is tied to a picture and a spoken word, so students hear the sound and then have to choose the spelling. The mistake sentences use the other word from the pair, which is the error learners usually make in writing.
